In Sonic Unleashed, Sonic must collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds in order to win the game. The emeralds can be found in the lives bubbles in levels. The yellow Chaos Emerald is hidden in the normald land. The red Chaos Emerald is hidden in the rocket ship level. The blue Chaos Emerald is hidden in the derived mine swap scene. The white Chaos Emerald is hidden in the last level of the game, the derived mine swap scene.

There are several power-ups in Sonic games Unleashed which are related to the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic can use his shoes of greed to fly into the sky. Sonic can also collect the chaos emeralds, which will unleash the Chaos Emerald. When collecting all the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic will be able to incorporating the character into Super Sonic. In the mission of the game, Sonic must collect the 7 emeralds hidden. The emeralds are scattered in different locations; each location leading to a different world. When the player collects the yellow spring, entrance to the special stage appears. The special stage appears for a limited time only. The players will find themselves in a different world among the special stages. For example, Sonic will appear in the level entrance after the player passes through the special stage.

The emeralds are used to unlock a bonus game, time attack, and warp zone. The yellow spring serves as the only entrance to the special stage.
