The Competitive Play
DotA was designed to be a highly competitive video game where only the skills of the player are taken into consideration. The key to winning a match is showing the ability to play the game throughout the match and using the abilities of your character wisely. Hero abilities and item builds are combined with level and skill-based trades to give gamers the edge they need to win.
On the 27th of November, theforge has released a beta version of the game. TheForge will be hosting the Beta tournaments which will give DotA players the ability to show the ability of their DotA skills. More information about the tournament can be found on the official website.
Showing your skills involves a series of tournaments being played out in order to reach the championship. In all the tournaments 3 heroes from each tier are used. In addition to heroes, the game also includes heroes that are voiced by famous voice actors.
They have extensive talents for both offensive and defensive strategies. Unstacking opponents skillfully is a huge element of playing DotA. Each game is a best of three, with the least amount of time left for each team to find a hero that can turn the tide of battle.
The activate and item system allowing for different builds of the same hero is the focus of DotA. Beta gamers are also given priority in order to test new heroes before they are released to the public. Unranked matches are used for training new heroes. Undoubtedly the 10 released heroes (most are from each tier) will never be optimum but it gives gamers an idea of what the game is like in overall system.
The game displays damage based upon how much damage is inflicted upon the opponent. If there is significant damage done the display shows both critical and regular damage inflicted on the opponent. Basic damage indicators also appear for important spells doing damage to the opponent.
When you start the game you are required to choose a hero to enlist for the next phase of the game. In the phase of creating the hero you can choose skills from each tier. In the beginning you have to choose whether you want to play offensive or support role.
During the match you will notice that you do a lot of movement, the more you move more spots down the map will open up for you, you are basically racing against the clock to beat the opposing teams heroes to the experience points in the greatest span of time. Not only you will be racing against the clock but you will also be racing with your abilities. Whenever a player kills a opponent he gains the ability to use that abilities.
There is a hefty focus on using the ability power. Each ability in the game has a different casting time and a different range of casting times and ranges. You also get to choose what part of your hero will cast the spell.
At first it might seem a bit complicated, but once you get accustomed to using the heroes and the layouts of the game it will be intriguing, making you feel like the pro gamers who scores hundreds of Congratulations after playing each match, each match seems to be a new challenge.
